New iPhone will be Made of Liquidmetal

Back in 2010, Apple had acquired rights to Liquidmetal Technologies' "amorphous metal alloys"  to bring their proprietary IP to Apple's consumer electronics products. Since then there have been rumors that next generation iOS devices will be made of liquidmetal.

Korean website - ETNews claims that the next generation iPhone will be made of "liquid metal" alloys, which will be thinner and lighter and more resistant to impact damage.

According to industry sources, the next flagship phones of [Apple and Samsung] are expected to adopt unprecedented materials for their main bodies, that is, ceramic for the Galaxy S3 and liquid metal for iPhone5, both being thin, light and highly resistant to external impacts. The new phase of the rivalry is because neither one of them can get a decisive edge over the other solely with its OS and AP specifications, features or design.

LiquidMetal is a series of exotic alloy components developed by researchers at CalTech and is often referred to as "bulk metallic glass". This is due to its atomic structure that makes it glass-like while offering a super-strong yet extremely flexible material that is resistant to corrosion and is scratch-proof as well.

ETNews also claims that Apple will launch the next generation iPhone made of liquidmetal at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June. It's hard to believe that Apple will launch a new iPhone in just 9 months after the launch of iPhone 4S, so take this with a pinch of salt.

According to recent rumors, the next iPhone will be coming in fall 2012, which will feature the same 3.5-inch screen or very close to it, support 4G LTE networks and come with  a new micro dock connector. It remains to be seen if Apple will call it the new iPhone (like the new iPad) or iPhone 6 (sixth generation iPhone) or iPhone 5 (still seems to be a favorite among many websites).

A5X on iPad 3

Apple is expected to introduce an upgraded processor and graphics package for the iPad 3, with the assumption being that it would be called the A6 after the A4 initially appeared in the original iPad and iPhone 4 and was succeeded by the A5 in the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S. But if this photo is to be believed, that assumption appears to have been incorrect, with Apple instead having branded the upgraded package with the A5X name.

A date code of "1146" on the A5X indicates that it was manufactured in the 46th week of 2011, which would have corresponded to November 14-20.

An "A5X" as a step-wise upgrade to the A5 corresponds with progression of processor part numbers as revealed by BGR in February. At the time the A4 was known to be the S5L8930X, the A5 as the S5L8940X and the new iPad processor as S5L8945X.

Several other features are also visible on the logic board, including a pair of 16 GB flash memory chips from Hynix and a rectangular Apple-branded chip. That chip appears to correspond to power management chips found in previous iPad teardowns but which carries a higher part number, suggesting an upgraded part.

Apple is expected to introduce the iPad 3 at a media event on March 7, with the device also receiving an ultra high-resolution display and LTE capabilities. Other claims have suggested that it will carry a slightly more tapered case design and perhaps offer an 8-megapixel rear camera.

Really HD Screen Display on iPad 3

Following a report from AllThingsD earlier claiming that Apple will introduce the iPad 3 in the first week of March, The New York Times is now weighing in with its own sources corroborating claims of a faster processor and a "really HD" screen in a package nearly identical in appearance to the iPad 2.

An Apple employee said that the version of the new iPad that is being tested inside the company is “essentially the same size and shape as the iPad 2,” with an improved and “really HD” screen. The tablet will include a faster processor, said the employee, who did not want to be identified because Apple is not fond of leaks.
The claims line up with a number of previous rumors about the iPad 3's improvements, with a high-resolution display being one of the most highly-anticipated upgrades for the new device. Earlier today, photos of a Sharp display claimed to be for the iPad 3 also surfaced, although the screen's resolution can not be verified from the photos.
Indications that the iPad 3 will be nearly identical in appearance to the iPad 2 are also supported by recent photo leaks showing the rear shell of the device inside and out.

iPad 3 & iPad 4 Announced this year

In an effort to continue throwing ideas at the wall to see what might stick, the only occasionally reliable Digitimes today reported that not only will Apple be releasing the iPad 3 with high-resolution Retina display in March as is widely expected, but that the company will follow that up with the release of the iPad 4 in October.

On the topic of the iPad 3, Digitimes suggests that the Retina display will be the main attraction of the new device, with better battery life also serving to entice customers. But other hardware upgrades for the iPad 3 are said to be rather minimal, as Apple is reportedly rolling out the iPad 3 alongside an iPad 2 price cut to $399 as an interim effort to set the stage for a bigger battle with the competition later in the year.

Apple will ship the so-called iPad 3 with a full HD display in March and then iPad 4, named so by its component suppliers, with killer applications in October, according to industry sources in Taiwan.

But a true battle for market share will arrive in the second half of the year when Apple ships its iPad 4 in October, about the time when Microsoft releases its Window 8 and Intel unveils its Clover Trail-W platform, the sources commented.

The 9.7 inch iPad 4 is expected to come with much upgraded hardware specifications and integrated applications so as to compete with an array of Android, Wintel or WoA (Windows on ARM) based tablet PCs to be released in the fourth quarter, said the sources.

The rumor is somewhat reminiscent of last year's round of claims, which suggested that the iPad 2's successor would appear in late 2011 as an interim upgrade carrying a Retina display. Claims of a late 2011 iPad came from several different sources in July and early August of last year before other sources including The Wall Street Journal put the claim to rest.

Digitimes has a proliferative record of Apple-related rumors and has occasionally offered accurate information. But its information is generally considered unreliable given a significant number of claims that have failed to materialize. Claims of two separate iPad launches this year are sure to pique interest though, and we'll be waiting to hear if other sources offer similar information going forward.
